One of the most important Cancun travel tips is to understand the layout of the city before traveling here.
Most people don’t know that Cancun has two very different areas: the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) and Downtown Cancun, also called El Centro.
The Hotel Zone is a safe spot for tourists. It is a long, narrow strip of land shaped like the number “7”.
Here, you will find plenty of resorts, Cancun beaches, restaurants, and nightlife.
Downtown is where locals actually live. So, it is louder, more authentic, and significantly more affordable.
Choose your stay and make plans accordingly because this will ultimately shape your experience!

Cancun Travel Tips: Choose the Right Time to Visit Cancun
Another important thing to know when traveling to Cancun is what the weather is going to be, so you know what to expect.
The best time to visit Cancun Mexico is December to April, when the weather is dry and sunny.
But this is the peak season, so lots of people would be there.
If you want a little less crowd, then May and June are good.
The weather is warm, humid, but still lovely, and you get better hotel rates.
July and August are hot and busy — peak family travel season, especially for Americans.
September and October are hurricane season. I would avoid those months entirely unless you are watching flight prices and willing to take the risk.
For most Americans traveling for the first time, I always recommend November through April — the sweet spot of great weather, manageable crowds, and reliable sunshine.

Cancun Travel Tips: Book Your Cancun Hotel Wisely
One of the most important Cancun travel tips I can give you is to put some real thought into where you stay.
For first-timers, I feel an all-inclusive resort in the Hotel Zone is the perfect choice.
You get unlimited food and drinks, and a beautiful beach right outside your door.
You just pay once and get pampered throughout the trip.
However, if you are someone who loves to explore and eat out, then choosing a boutique hotel will be better as it can save you a lot of money.
The Hotel Zone has options for every budget. So, you can easily get a stay from $80 a night all the way to $800+.
Make sure to compare the prices first before booking anything.

Not All Cancun Beaches Are the Same
The beaches along the Hotel Zone are quite different.
The northernmost beaches, closest to downtown, tend to have rougher waves and stronger currents.
So, they aren’t the best for swimming.
You can find calm, clean, and swimmable beaches in the middle and southern parts of the Hotel Zone.
One of my favorite beaches in the world is Playa Delfines, which also happens to be the most photographed one in Cancun.
If you are with family, then Playa Tortugas beach is perfect, especially for snorkeling tours.
For those who want a relaxing morning on the beach, Playa Langosta is the one.
One thing to note is that always check the beach flag system before swimming.
If there is a red flag, then that means a strict no due to dangerous conditions.

Cancun Travel Tips: Bring Cash and Know How to Use It Smartly
Your resorts and restaurants will take credit cards, but most street vendors, local markets, and small shops accept cash only.
The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN).
You can also use US dollars in the Hotel Zone, but the exchange rate is the worst!
I would advise that you withdraw pesos directly from an ATM rather than exchanging cash at airport kiosks or hotel desks.
There are plenty of ATMs throughout the Hotel Zone; you can easily find one.

Do at Least One Day Trip From Cancun
Another great tip for traveling to Cancun is that it makes a wonderful base for exploring more of Mexico, especially the Yucatan Peninsula.
You can visit one of the seven wonders of the world, Chichén Itzá, from here. It is just a 2.5-hour drive.
For those who love swimming, there are plenty of cenotes near Cancun so you can easily swim in one of them.
You can also take a 30-minute ferry to reach the charming island of Isla Mujeres, where you can explore the tiny streets and chill on the beach.
And for history lovers, the Tulum ruins are perfect. You can learn about the ancient Mayan history while enjoying stunning views!

Cancun Travel Tips: Eat Beyond Your Resort Buffet
One of the most important Cancun travel tips is to not stick to resort food all the time.
A lot of people regret not trying street food, and trust me, you could be missing out on the most delicious meals ever.
Here are some dishes and drinks you absolutely must try during your Cancun, Mexico, travel:
- Tacos al pastor – This is a must-try, especially from a street stall. It is basically slow-roasted, marinated pork on a corn tortilla, which is just too good!
- Cochinita pibil – Another dish to try is this Yucatan specialty, where pulled pork is slow-cooked with achiote and citrus.
- Fresh ceviche – You can also try tangy and fresh ceviche, which is generally served on the beach.
- Marquesitas – My favorites were Marquesitas, a thin crepe rolled with cheese and sweet fillings.
- Mezcal margarita – Last, but not least, try a Mezcal margarita at least once. You will understand the hype immediately.
If you want affordable food, then stay away from the beachfront, and you will be surprised by the 30-40% drop in prices!

Cancun Travel Tips: Know the Safety Basics
The Hotel Zone is genuinely very safe.
It is well-patrolled and heavily tourism-focused.
In fact, millions of people visit every year without incident.
You don’t need to be scared, just follow basic safety guidelines like not going out after dark alone.
Always take Uber or licensed cabs only. Don’t take water from strangers or try tap water; bottled water is the safest in Mexico.

Pack Smart for Cancun Weather and Activities
Here is what I always make sure to bring:
- Reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen – One of the most important things to pack for your Cancun trip is a reef-safe sunscreen. This is actually required by Mexican law at most cenotes and natural parks.
- A wide-brimmed sun hat – Of course, the sun can be really harsh in Cancun, so make sure to protect yourself with a hat.
- Light, breathable cover-ups and linen pants – This is the best choice for exploring the areas while being respectful.
- Comfortable walking sandals AND sneakers — Since you will be walking a lot on the uneven terrain of the ruins, make sure to wear walking sandals and sneakers.
- A small cross-body bag – This is easier than a big tote and harder to grab.
- Insect repellent – Make sure to bring repellent, especially if you are heading to cenotes or jungle areas.
- Waterproof phone pouch — Of course, if you want to take photos and videos, then carry a waterproof phone pouch for cenotes, boats, and beach days.
One amazing thing about traveling to Cancun is that US plugs work in Mexico.
So, you do not need to get a travel adapter.

One of the most important Cancun travel tips that I wish someone had told me was to book your activities before you arrive.
The best cenote tours, Chichén Itzá excursions, and whale shark swims fill up fast.
Don’t make the mistake of postponing this and booking it after landing in Cancun.
