So, the temperature ranges between 80 and 90°F year-round.

November to April is the best time to visit Cozumel because the weather is dry and sunny.

Plus, the sea is calm with the best visibility for diving and snorkeling.

May and June are warmer, but there are fewer tourists around. So, you get good hotel rates as well.

I would advise you to avoid June to October.

It tends to be really humid and hot, and it is the hurricane season in the Caribbean from September to October.

But of course, if you want to catch whale sharks, then June to September is the best time to visit.

Cozumel Travel Tips: Spend Time on the Best Beaches in Cozumel

One of the most important Cozumel travel tips for first-timers is that the beaches in Cozumel don’t look the same.

The West Coast is where the cruise terminals, town, and hotels are.

So, the water is calm, clear, and perfect for swimming. You will find the best beaches here.

On the other hand, the East Coast is lined with rugged cliffs and crashing waves.

You cannot swim this side because the currents are strong and dangerous.

A lot of tourists prefer Playa Palancar beach. It has direct access to the famous Cozumel reef and a great beach bar as well.

For those who love parties and beach clubs, Playa San Francisco is the perfect choice.

But if you are into snorkeling and quiet beach time, then head to Playa Corona.

Cash is King in Cozumel, Mexico

Mexico is a cash-heavy country, especially once you leave the resort or cruise port areas.

You can use US dollars in most tourist areas, but you will get a better deal when paying in Mexican pesos, especially at markets and street food stalls.

There are plenty of ATMs you can find in San Miguel town and near the cruise terminals, and you can withdraw cash directly from there.

I like to visit my local bank before I leave on my trip and purchase pesos there. It is free, and the currency exchange is better.

One of my top Cozumel travel tips is that you CANNOT miss Cozumel diving if you are certified diver.

No, I am not kidding. You have to try diving at least once here.

This beautiful destination is right beside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.

Since this reef is a federally protected marine park, it is in amazing condition.

The visibility is around 80 to 100 feet, and water temperature remains between 79 and 84°F year-round.

Drift diving here is just a completely different experience.

So, make sure to at least experience diving once during your visit to Cozumel if you are certified.

Top Things to Do in Cozumel

Cozumel has plenty more to offer than just diving.

For swimmers, snorkeling is a great option here.

The reef is shallow and clear, so you can pretty much see most of what divers see.

I loved snorkeling in El Cielo, which is a famous shallow sandbar covered in starfish.

Another great spot for snorkeling is the Palancar Shallows, where you can see eagle rays, sea turtles, and more!

Apart from snorkeling, there are plenty of other things to do in Cozumel as well, such as:

• Catamaran sunset sail – You can enjoy a sunset on a catamaran with an open bar, snorkel a pristine reef, and just enjoy some quiet time on the water.
• Parasailing – This is also an amazing activity, and you get great views of the island and the reef from above.

Don’t be one of those tourists who spend their entire time on the cruise or the beach and completely skip the amazing food here.

A few things that you should try here are fresh ceviche, fish tacos, lobster, cochinita pibil, and so on.

What is the Best Way to Get Around Cozumel

If you want convenience and budget is not an issue, then taxis are best. They are safe and affordable.

Make sure to confirm the fare before getting in because there are no meters here and prices are zone-based.

Another popular travel option in Cozumel is golf cart rentals.

I find this to be the most fun way to see the island.

You can rent a golf cart for the day and head to the beach, drive around the coast, or whatever you feel like.

There are plenty of scooters and jeep rentals here too.

Personally, I loved walking, especially in downtown Miguel.

It is the best way to explore the main squares, shops, restaurants, and more.

Packing Tips for Cozumel

As I shared in my Cancun travel tips, pack smartly for your beach vacation in Cozumel. Here is what I always make sure to bring:

• Reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen – This is required by Mexican law at most natural parks and cenotes, especially since the Cozumel reef is a protected marine park.
• A wide-brimmed sun hat – when you are going on a beach vacation in the Caribbean sun, a wide-brimmed sun hat is a must.
• A rash guard – you will need it if you are planning to snorkel or dive a lot in Cozumel.
• Waterproof sandals and comfortable sneakers – Carry both because you will need them when you are chilling on the beach or exploring the Mayan ruins in Cozumel, Mexico.
